Place & Story

Place & Story explores how the character of a location can shape an artwork collection. Each study draws on the forms, surfaces and spatial rhythms of a place, translating them into distinct compositions.

River City Studies

A conceptual response to Richmond and the James River

River City Studies responds to Richmond and the James River through moving water, canal geometry, natural objects and reflected light. Blue-green passages connect the four works, while pale stone, warm wood and ochre accents give each a distinct rhythm. The collection moves from the scale of the river and built edges to quieter observations of form and light.

Fall Line

Elevated painterly view of blue-green water and white currents flowing diagonally between broad gray and warm-toned rock slabs.

A broken sweep of pale rock divides deep blue-green water into quiet pools and quick, bright channels. The elevated viewpoint turns the river’s movement into a study of weight, direction and interval. The composition is inspired by the exposed rock and rapids of the James River corridor.

Canal Trace

Vertical architectural abstraction with a deep teal channel, pale stone-colored blocks, terracotta planes, thin dark lines and a curved charcoal arch.

A narrow blue-green passage rises between pale, stepped planes, warm clay blocks and a dark arch. Fine lines and worn-looking edges suggest the rhythm of built stone around water. The composition interprets Richmond’s canal structures through layered geometry.

Riverbank Still Life

Pale weathered driftwood rests on an ivory ground beside two dried seed stems and a curled ochre leaf.

Pale wood, fine seed stems and a curled leaf form a quiet arrangement against a warm ivory field. The contrast between worn grain, delicate branches and folded surfaces brings attention to the character of small natural forms.

Reflected Light

Square abstraction of blue-gray and deep teal passages crossed by broken ivory marks and restrained ochre accents.

Layered blue-gray and deep teal fields are interrupted by broken ivory and ochre marks. Vertical passages and short lateral shifts suggest reflected light disturbed by moving water.
