What defines the Scandinavian look

A bright, airy base of white, off-white, and pale grey. Light woods, ash, birch, pale oak. Natural textiles and materials. Function-first forms with nothing extraneous. What works

Light, airy compositions. Work with open space and a bright ground extends the room rather than weighing it down.

Framing, light and natural. Pale wood or thin, simple frames align with the palette; heavy or dark ornate frames break it.

Palette against pale walls. On white and off-white walls, even soft colours read strongly. Sample on-site; what looks muted in isolation can dominate a bright room.

Warmth over cool. Lean to warm neutrals and soft tones. Cool, high-key minimalism drifts toward clinical, which is the one thing Scandinavian is not.

Restraint in quantity. A few well-chosen pieces suit the aesthetic better than a full wall.

Common mistakes

Reading minimal as cold and choosing stark, cool work that strips the hygge out of the room.

Introducing a saturated, high-contrast piece that fights the light base.

Over-hanging, when the style depends on breathing room.
